WASHINGTON, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Phoenix Mercury got past the New York Liberty 76-62 at home on Saturday as both sides are grappling for one of the final Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) playoffs spots.
The Mercury snapped their three-game losing skid, while the Liberty saw their three-game winning streak brought to an end. The Mercury (14-19) surpassed the Liberty (13-19) to sit eighth on the standings, with top eight finishers in the regular season advancing to the playoffs.
Diamond DeShields led the Mercury with 25 points. Shey Peddy and Sophie Cunningham contributed 20 and 18 points respectively.
The Mercury came out strong at an early stage and built a 25-16 lead as the first quarter ran out, and maintained their leading position for the rest of the match.
Going into the fourth quarter 58-46 ahead, the Mercury extended their advantage to 17 points through Peddy's shot from beyond the arc. The Liberty chipped away at the Mercury's lead to 10 points after Sami Whitcomb hit a three-pointer midway through the final period, but could not continue their momentum from there to turn around the table.
Sabrina Ionescu was the only Liberty player reaching double-figures with 20 points. Chinese center Han Xu shot 3 of 7 from the floor to score six points.
The Mercury will host the Minnesota Lynx on Wednesday, and the Liberty will visit the sixth-placed Dallas Wings on Monday.
