MADRID, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Cadiz became the first team to assure promotion to La Liga after Zaragoza lost at home to Oviedo on Sunday night.
The popular team from southwestern Spain return to the top flight after a 14-year absense, during which they spent seven difficult seasons in the third-tier Segunda Division B.
Cadiz are promoted despite losing at home to Fuenlabrada on Saturday night, as Zaragoza's 4-2 defeat at home to Oviedo late on Sunday meant that the side sitting third in the table remain seven points behind Cadiz with just six points left to play for.
Club president Manuel Vizcaino celebrated the return to the top flight by confirming that the club had signed former Sevilla, Manchester City and Valencia striker Alvaro Negredo.
It was not all good news in Cadiz, however, with the club's fans coming in for criticism for the reception they gave the team bus ahead of Saturday's game against Fuenlabrada.
Images broadcast on Spanish TV showed thousands of fans singing and dancing in the street, many without protective facemasks and with no social distancing measures despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
To avoid a repeat of these scenes, the club confirmed on Sunday it would not hold an official event to celebrate its promotion.
