San Jose salvages draw at home against Orlando City

Sports Xchange - Thursday 18th May, 2017

San Jose and Orlando City SC settled for a 1-1 draw after both teams netted late goals just minutes apart Wednesday night at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, Calif.

Carlos Rivas scored for Orlando City (6-3-2). Chris Wondolowski scored the equalizer for San Jose (4-4-3), which remained unbeaten at home.

Both teams had opportunities to score in the early stages of the opening half. Orlando City's Cyle Larin had a chance at a header from the center of the box in the 10th minute, but his attempt was high and to the right. Wondolowski took aim from the center of the box in the 18th, but his shot was too high.

Larin got another opportunity moments later, but his shot toward the right corner of the net was saved by San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham. Jahmir Hyka took a shot from outside the box in the 26th minute, but that one was saved by Orlando City goalkeeper Joe Bendik.

Each team had more chances early in the second half, but neither could break the stalemate. Bingham saved a shot by Orlando City's Luis Gil in the 56th minute. San Jose's Nick Lima and Florian Jungwirth were off the mark on their shot attempts later in the half.

The Lions finally capitalized on an opportunity when Rivas scored in the 80th minute. Rivas took a pass from Victor Pagliari Giro, fired from the center of the box and placed the ball in the bottom right corner, giving Orlando City a 1-0 lead.

San Jose evened the score when Wondolowski scored on an assist from Tommy Thompson following a corner kick in the 83rd minute.

Officials added four minutes of stoppage time, but neither team could produce the go-ahead goal.

Orlando City out-shot San Jose 18-11 and had a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Bingham finished with three saves. Bendik had two.
